Annaprashan

Duration- 1-2 hours

Annaprashan Puja, also called Annaprasana or the Rice Feeding Ceremony, is a sacred Hindu ritual that marks a baby’s first intake of solid food, usually rice or kheer. The term Annaprashan means “initiation into grains.” It is an important samskara (rite of passage) that signifies the child’s physical and spiritual development and seeks divine blessings for health, digestion, and overall well-being.

In Hindu tradition, the first feeding of solid food is both a nutritional and spiritual milestone. Through this ceremony, prayers are offered to family deities and ancestors to ensure the baby’s body is prepared for solid food and remains protected from illness.

Importance of Annaprashan

  • Supports healthy digestion and growth
  • Protects from food-related ailments
  • Marks the transition from milk to solid food
  • Brings blessings from elders and family deities
Annaprashan is usually performed when the baby is between 6 to 8 months of age (commonly in the 6th month for boys and 5th or 7th month for girls), depending on Janma Nakshatra, Tithi, and family customs. It can be conducted at home or in a temple in the presence of family members. The muhurat is fixed by the Panditji based on astrology.

The main rituals of Annaprashan include a puja or prayer ceremony, where the baby is blessed with prayers and mantras. The baby is then fed a symbolic first meal of solid food, usually rice pudding (kheer) or another grain-based food.

The first solid food offered during Annaprashan is typically a mix of rice and milk, often in the form of rice pudding (kheer). The specific food items may vary based on regional customs and family preferences.

The immediate family members, relatives, and close friends of the baby's parents usually participate in the Annaprashan ceremony. It is a joyous occasion, and the presence of loved ones adds to the celebration.
