Maharashtra Tourism itself notes durations ranging from 1.5 days to 5–7 and 11 days.
Why Do People Keep Ganpati for Different Numbers of Days?
The central idea of Ganesh Chaturthi is to welcome Lord Ganesha into the home, worship Him with devotion, seek His blessings, and then respectfully perform Ganesh Visarjan.
The idol represents a sacred presence that is welcomed temporarily. The visarjan symbolizes returning the divine form to nature and accepting the cycle of creation and dissolution.
Therefore, keeping Ganpati for fewer days does not mean less devotion. A family following a traditional 1.5-day Ganpati is following a genuine tradition, just as a family celebrating for 10 days is following another established tradition.
1 Day, 1.5 Days, 3 Days, 5 Days or 10 Days – What Is the Difference?
1.5-Day Ganpati – Dedh Din Ganpati
The 1.5-day Ganpati tradition is particularly popular in Maharashtra. The idol is installed on Ganesh Chaturthi and immersed the following day.
It is often called Dedh Din Ganpati and is one of the most common household traditions in Maharashtra.
3-Day Ganpati
Some families perform Ganpati Visarjan on the third day. This allows devotees to perform daily puja, aarti and naivedya for a couple of days before bidding farewell to Bappa.
5-Day Ganpati
The 5-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebration is another widely followed household tradition. Families continue daily worship before performing visarjan on the fifth day.
7-Day Ganpati
Some households keep Lord Ganesha for 7 days, particularly where this is part of their established family or regional tradition.
10-Day Ganeshotsav
The most prominent public tradition culminates on Anant Chaturdashi, the tenth day after Ganesh Chaturthi. Large public Ganpati celebrations commonly continue until this day, when grand Ganesh Visarjan takes place. In 2026, Anant Chaturdashi falls on September 25.
Does the Tradition Differ by Region and Community?
Yes. Ganesh Chaturthi traditions vary considerably across India.
Maharashtra is particularly famous for its elaborate Ganeshotsav. Both household and public celebrations may follow different durations, from 1.5 days to the full festival period.
In Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India, Ganesh Chaturthi is also celebrated enthusiastically, but the exact duration and visarjan customs can vary from family to family and community to community.
Even within the same city, two families may have completely different traditions.
So, How Many Days Should You Keep Ganpati at Home?
The best approach is to follow your family's established tradition or Kul Parampara. If your family has traditionally performed Ganpati Visarjan after 1.5 days, there is no need to feel that a longer celebration is more religious.
Similarly, if your family traditionally keeps Ganpati for 5, 7 or 10 days, you can continue that practice.
The number of days is less important than the devotion, purity of intention and proper worship offered during those days.
If your family has no established tradition, it is advisable to consult a knowledgeable priest or follow the local tradition rather than assuming that Ganpati must always be kept for 10 days.
