Shani pooja

Shani Pooja is dedicated to Lord Shani, one of the nine primary celestial beings in Hindu astrology. He is the deity associated with the planet Saturn and is known for his influence on justice, discipline, and karma. Performing Shani Pooja can help mitigate the negative effects of Saturn, bring protection, and bestow blessings for success and prosperity.

Steps and Procedure of Shani Pooja

  1. Preparation:

    • Choose a clean and quiet place for the pooja, preferably a temple dedicated to Lord Shani or at home.
    • Take a bath and wear clean clothes, preferably black or dark blue, as these colors are associated with Lord Shani.
    • Set up an altar with an idol or picture of Lord Shani. Decorate the altar with flowers, especially black or blue flowers, and light lamps.
  2. Setting Up the Altar:

    • Place a clean cloth on the altar.
    • Place the idol or picture of Lord Shani in the center.
    • Arrange the necessary items such as a lamp (diya), incense sticks, black sesame seeds, mustard oil, iron objects, black cloth, flowers, fruits, and sweets.
  3. Invocation:

    • Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles. You can chant the mantra "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah."
    • Meditate on Lord Shani, visualizing his divine form and attributes.
  4. Main Rituals:

    • Dhyana (Meditation): Sit quietly and meditate on Lord Shani.
    • Avahana (Invocation): Invite Lord Shani to the altar with the Avahana mantra.
    • Asana (Offering a Seat): Offer a seat to the deity using black or dark blue cloth.
    • Padya (Washing the Feet): Symbolically wash the feet of the deity with water mixed with black sesame seeds.
    • Arghya (Offering): Offer water mixed with mustard oil, black sesame seeds, and iron filings.
    • Achamana (Purification): Offer water for sipping to purify.
    • Snana (Bathing): Offer water, milk, honey, and mustard oil as a symbolic bath to the deity.
    • Vastra (Clothing): Offer black or dark blue clothes to the idol or picture.
    • Abharana (Jewelry): Adorn the idol with iron jewelry or ornaments.
    • Gandha (Fragrance): Apply sandalwood paste or mustard oil to the idol.
    • Pushpa (Flowers): Offer black or blue flowers and garlands.
    • Dhoopa (Incense): Light incense sticks and wave them before the deity.
    • Deepa (Lamp): Light the lamp filled with mustard oil and perform aarti.
    • Naivedya (Food Offering): Offer black sesame sweets, black gram, and other food items.
    • Tambula (Betel Leaves): Offer betel leaves and nuts.
  5. Chanting Shani Mantras:

    • Chant Shani mantras such as "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah" or the Shani Gayatri Mantra "Om Kaakadhwajaaya Vidmahe Khadgahastaaya Dheemahi Tanno Mandah Prachodayat" with devotion and concentration.
  6. Shani Aarti:

    • Sing the Shani Aarti with devotion and reverence.
    • Wave the aarti plate in a circular motion in front of the idol.
  7. Closing Prayers:

    • Conclude the pooja by seeking Lord Shani's blessings for protection, justice, and prosperity.
    • Distribute the prasad (offered food) among family members and friends.
