Panchak Pooja
Panchak Pooja is a Hindu ritual performed to mitigate the inauspicious effects of the Panchak period. Panchak is a specific period in the Hindu lunar calendar when the Moon transits through the last five constellations (Nakshatras): Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. These periods are considered inauspicious for starting new ventures, traveling, conducting marriages, and performing significant life events. The Panchak period generally lasts for about five days.
-
Purpose: The main aim of Panchak Pooja is to nullify the adverse effects associated with this period, ensuring safety, prosperity, and success in one's endeavors.
-
Procedure:
- Preparation: The pooja typically involves specific items like fresh flowers, fruits, coconut, incense sticks, and other traditional pooja materials.
- Mantras and Prayers: Various mantras are chanted to appease the deities and seek their blessings. These can include the Panchak Shanti Mantra and other relevant prayers.
- Offerings: Devotees offer items such as fruits, sweets, and other offerings to the deities.
- Fire Ritual (Homa): A homa or havan (fire ritual) is performed, where offerings are made into the sacred fire while chanting mantras.
-
Timings: The Panchak Pooja is ideally performed at the beginning or during the Panchak period. The exact timing and muhurat (auspicious time) for the pooja are determined by consulting a qualified astrologer.
-
Priest: It is recommended to have a knowledgeable priest or pandit perform the pooja to ensure all rituals and chants are done correctly.
Benefits of Panchak Pooja

Performing Panchak Pooja at Home
- Clean the Pooja Area: Ensure the area where the pooja is to be performed is clean.
- Set Up the Altar: Arrange the pooja items on a clean cloth or altar.
- Light a Lamp and Incense: Light a diya (lamp) and incense sticks to purify the space.
- Chant Mantras: Recite the Panchak Shanti Mantra or other relevant prayers.
- Make Offerings: Offer fruits, sweets, and flowers to the deities.
- Perform Aarti: Conclude the pooja with an aarti, waving the lighted lamp in front of the deity's image or idol.

Pooja's FAQ
Panchak refers to a period of five days in the Hindu lunar month, specifically during the waxing and waning phases of the moon. It is considered an inauspicious time for certain activities due to the belief that natural elements are disturbed during this period.
Panchak occurs when the Moon is in the last two quarters (the eighth and the fourteenth tithis) during the waxing and waning phases. This period typically occurs once every month.
During Panchak, certain activities are considered inauspicious, including marriages, building construction, cremation, and cutting trees. These activities are believed to attract negative energies during this period.
Panchak is predominantly observed in Hindu communities that follow lunar calendars for auspicious timings and rituals. Different regions may have variations in the customs and beliefs associated with Panchak.
